You might see a few more people paddling on Simpson Lake this summer.
That’s because Big Muddy Adventures is launching a boat rental program at the 72-acre lake in Valley Park, where visitors will be able to rent kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards beginning this weekend. “Simpson Lake is an untapped, yet integral part of St. Louis’ paddling scene,” Roo Yawitz, owner of Big Muddy Adventures, said in a statement. “We’re excited to get the opportunity to help more people explore this natural beauty located right in the heart of St. Louis County.”
Rentals, which are provided on a first-come, first-served basis, start at $20 for one hour for canoes and double kayaks. Single kayak and SUP rentals start at $15 for one hour. All boaters are required to wear life jackets while on the water, and children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs are allowed on the boats, as long as owners can provide them with their own life jackets.
Rentals will be available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
The initiative at Simpson Park is the latest boat rental program led by Big Muddy Adventures, which has served as the rental operator at the Boathouse in Forest Park since 2018. In a press release, Yawitz says the company is also planning to introduce a bike rental program, as well as host special events and instructional classes at Simpson Park “in the near future.”
“Not only is Simpson Lake a great place to paddle a boat, but it’s also a great place to fish, picnic, and play,” Yawitz says. “The park’s trail system and amenities, along with its proximity to the Meramec River and the Meramec River Greenway, provide plenty of opportunities for people to get outside and get active, whether by foot, bike or boat.”
