Today, Civil Life Brewing Company owner Jake Hafner, the self-proclaimed Captain of the Barley Ship, made a major announcement via one of his famously garrulous emails:
Do you wish there was one location on this big blue marble that you could get American Brown in cans? Well, dreams do come true. It is with great pleasure that I announce you will soon be able to get the American Brown in cans at the brewery.

How soon? Next Tuesday, August 16, beginning at 4 p.m., customers will be able to purchase the cans directly from the canning line. The brewery will be canning a 40-BBL batch, or enough for 525 cases.
Hafner, whose birthday will be the same day, threw down an Olympics-inspired gauntlet with the announcement: If Civil Life sells out of the cans next Tuesday, the brewery will discount its imperial pints to $4 and half pints to $2 through the end of the Olympics, August 21. It’s a challenge, he noted, for “every one of us that was more likely to pull a muscle walking to the beer store than sprinting or swimming or jumping for a medal.”
The news is just the latest in Civil Life’s evolution over the past year. Last October, Hafner purchased property just north of the Tower Grove South brewhouse and taproom, with the possibility of expansion. Then, this summer, Civil Life hired two new brewers: Troy Bedik, who previously worked at Schlafly and is a member of Femme Ferment; and David Seymour, an award-winning home brewer and writer who brings a keen appreciation for English-style beers.
