On August 20, MLS4TheLou announced that St. Louis would soon be home to a new Major League Soccer team, and ever since, St. Louisans and news sources alike (including this one) have been throwing out suggestions as to what the team's name should be.
Some were earnest:
Others maybe not so much:
Some offered the reward of a pork steak for the best suggestion. Has there ever been anything more St. Louis?
Oh, wait...
But now St. Louisans have the opportunity to formally suggest team names—the MLS ownership group, largely made up of members of Enterprise's Taylor family and World Wide Technology CEO Jim Kavanaugh, has launched a survey asking fans for their input. Visit mls4thelou.com to weigh in on whether the team name should go traditional or modern, suggest one of your own, and explain your reasoning.
In a statement, the ownership group wrote that: “We’re thrilled we secured the 28th MLS expansion spot for St. Louis and we could not have done it without the passion and support from the people of St. Louis. Listening to the fans and having open communication with the community have been our top priorities since the beginning, so we can all rally together and be proud of this team. Knowing a team name is a crucial part of that, we setup an open survey for all fans to partake in and voice their opinions and ideas. We really cannot wait to see what everyone has come up with!”
We all know that letting the internet decide can sometimes lead to unintended consequences, so it's important to note that the survey is just that—the ownership team reserves the right not to pick from the suggestions, lest we end up with team Toasted Ravioli.
As of Wednesday, a representative for MLS4TheLou said that the ownership team did not have an anticipated date for the team name's announcement.
