In case you haven’t heard, St. Louis’ beer scene is kind of a big deal. Our fair city’s been voted the “Best Beer Scene” by USA Today readers. But don’t take their word for it. Visit some of the breweries within a 15-minute cab ride from downtown. Here’s just a sampling. (And for even more options, visit the STL Beer site.) Prost!

4 Hands Brewing

  • In a Nutshell: Among the most innovative breweries around, 4 Hands often teams up with other St. Louis companies and artists to produce memorable brews, in addition to hosting festivals and giving back to the community. Each location features in-house restaurant partners.

Friendship Brewing

  • In a Nutshell: The company prides itself on the motto “Friends Making Beer, Beer Making Friends.” True to the name, it offers a welcoming atmosphere with a variety of craft beers and events.
  • Try: Wentzville Brown, Bignose IPA. 100 E. Pitman, Wentzville (with additional locations in Flint Hill and Hannibal).

Good News Brewing Co.

  • In a Nutshell: Founders Dan Tripp and Matt Fair turned their home brewing hobby into a successful venture with a brewpub in O’Fallon, Missouri, as well as a coffee house and additional area locations—all rooted in community and shared passions.
  • Try:  Hazelnut Coffee Milk Stout, Perfect Storm Pale Ale. 330 Sonderen, O’Fallon, Missouri; 1121 N. 2nd, St. Charles (with additional locations in Defiance and Augusta).

Peel Brewing Co.

  • In a Nutshell: Peel features wood-fired pizzas, house-made pastas, and a variety of craft beers brewed onsite.

Perennial Artisan Ales

  • In a Nutshell: Known for its Belgian-style ales, Imperial stouts, Berliner Weisses, and barrel-aged beers, the brewery often uses local ingredients. It brewery in South City offers a full taproom and patio experience with a food partner, Sanguchitos. In Webster Grove, Perennial on Lockwood is situated in the same building as the acclaimed Olive + Oak and offers a curated selection of Perennial’s beers and a solid food menu.

Rockwell Beer Company

  • In a Nutshell: Rockwell brews a range of styles, aiming to make each one approachable and innovative. Its modern brewery near The Grove is partly constructed with shipping containers, while Rockwell Beer Garden in Francis Park is an ideal spot to enjoy a beer and pizza while the kids play.

Schlafly Beer

  • In a Nutshell: Before the beer boom of the past decade, there was Schlafly. The Tap Room opened its doors nearly 30 years ago, in 1991. Today, Schlafly offers a wide variety of beers, with multiple brewpub locations in Missouri and Illinois.

Shortleaf Brewing

  • In a Nutshell: With locations in O’Fallon, Missouri, and Camdenton, the family-run brewery specializes in American-style ales and lagers. 
  • Try: BOW Rider, AmericAle, MexicAle
  • Insider Tip: Look for Shortleaf on draft and in cans at area grocery stores and bottleshops. 7434 Village Center Drive, O’Fallon, Missouri; 311 Business Rte. 5, Camdenton

Side Project Brewing

  • In a Nutshell: Ranked among the top 10 in Paste’s aforementioned list of the “50 Best American Breweries of the 2010s,” Cory and Karen King’s Maplewood brewery is acclaimed for its oak-aged beers, notably its wild ales. As Paste writer Jim Vorel noted, “Even at a festival filled with absolute titans of the industry, people are still making a beeline for Side Project when the doors open, which marks them as elite among the elite. Today, there are three Maplewood locations, which offer different experiences. Beyond the brewery, which specializes in barrel-aged beers, rustic saisons, and wild ales, Side Project Cellar’s taproom and tasting room is a low-key spot to sample the brand’s extensive lineup of barrel-aged beers and guest taps. And Side Project Pizza is a relaxing outdoor extension, which serves a 14-inch pie with a 60-hour fermented sourdough, using Cory King’s farm-captured yeast from Saison du Fermier.

Urban Chestnut Brewing Company

  • In a Nutshell: Urban Chestnut’s roots are firmly planted in both the U.S. and Germany, with a Revolution series (paying homage to modern American beers) and Reverence series (timeless European-style brews).
  • Try: Zwickle, Schnicklefritz, Okatz, Fantasyland
  • Insider Tip: The annual Oktoberfest celebration is legendary. Midtown: 3229 Washington; The Grove, 4465 Manchester.

2nd Shift Brewing

  • In a Nutshell: Located in an under-the-radar industrial area just north of the iconic Hill neighborhood, the family-run brewery strives to create a welcoming environment and offers a wide variety of beer styles, including NA options. 
  • Try: Art of Neurosis, Brewligans, and Technical Ecstasy
  • Insider Tip: Look for Simon the brewery cat. Central State Sandwiches runs the kitchen. And try Busy Bees Root beer, which is made in-house. 1601 Sublette.

Alpha Brewing Company

  • In a Nutshell: Known for sours, Alpha has a well-rounded beer menu featuring multiple styles. The main location also offers food and a patio.
  • Try: Parity Error IPA. I Have The Sipster APA. Believes Brew Oatmeal Stout
  • Insider Tip: The Sipster Club at Alpha Brewing Company offers such benefits as beer discounts, early access to special releases, members-only events, and merchandise. Alpha also plans to open a brewstillery at 5232 Delmar. It’s slated to include a 2,300-square-foot tasting room and a 1,200-square-foot distilling space, as well as a small kitchen that will serve up St. Louis–style pizza and snacks. 4310 Fyler.

Anheuser-Busch

  • In a Nutshell: A tour of the storied brick brewery in Soulard is a must. Stand in the Clydesdales’ stable, gaze up at Reynard the Fox, and sample a beer—all for free.
  • Try: The classics: Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob ULTRA
  • Insider Tip: Take the Beermaster Tour for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the brewing process, and see the famous Budweiser Clydesdales​. 1200 Lynch.

Blue Jay Brewing

  • In a Nutshell: One of St. Louis’ newest craft breweries, this Midtown brewery focuses on small-batch lagers brewed in small artisanal batches. 
  • Try: Okay! Little Birds
  • Insider Tip: Consider grabbing a brew at the family-friendly establishment before CITY SC matches and walking to CITYPARK. 2710 Locust.

Bluewood Brewing

  • In a Nutshell: Launched in 2019 at Lemp’s historic stables, Bluewood pushes brewing boundaries with artisan ales made from the “original four” founders’ expertise and love of the craft. 
  • Try: Arch City Haze, Battle Haze. 1821 Cherokee.

Civil Life Brewing Company 

  • In a Nutshell: After first making a name for himself at 33 Wine Bar in Lafayette Square, Jake Hafner turned to another beverage and opened Civil Life in Tower Grove South. He then began offering cans of the popular American Brown and expanded the brewery in 2018. If you visit the brewery, note the house rules on the website, ways of keeping things civil, including an aversion to mean people and no buses or limos: “It’s a pub not the Oscars.”
  • Try: American Brown Ale, The Angel and The Sword
  • Insider Tip: Enjoy a game of darts or shuffleboard while sipping a brew, and relax on the sprawling patio when the weather is nice. 3714 Holt.

Heavy Riff Brewing

  • In a Nutshell: The Dogtown brewery features 36 taps, house-smoked barbecue, and a playlist that lives up to the name.
  • Try: Velvet Underbrown, Love Gun. 6413 Clayton.

Modern Brewery

  • In a Nutshell: Co-founder Beamer Eisele has some serious brewing credentials, having studied under top brewers across the nation before returning to his hometown and opening Modern. The brewery’s location, just south of I-64, features robust beer and food options. 
  • Try: Citrapolis IPA, Green Goliath, Disco Punch
  • Inside Tip: The patio overlooks Forest Park and is a wonderful place to enjoy a beer and bite to eat. 5200 Oakland.

Square One Brewery and Distillery

  • In a Nutshell: Years ago, Steve Neukomm transformed a historic building in Lafayette Square that once housed an Anheuser-Busch–owned tavern and dance hall into one of the most charming breweries in St. Louis. Today, the Lafayette Square brewery and distillery offers a unique combination of handcrafted beers and spirits made on-site. 
  • Try: Park Avenue Pale Ale, Maple Stout
  • Insider Tip: When the weather’s nice, the quaint patio’s a hidden gem. And the menu spans both the cocktails from Spirits of St. Louis distillery and more extensive food options than most microbreweries. 1727 Park, St. Louis.

Wellspent Brewing Co. (Closed in June 2025)

  • In a Nutshell: With a solid selection of brews on tap, the brewery is a place where beer enthusiasts and families gather for beer and games.
  • Try: Keller Pils
  • Insider Tip: Call ahead to see if the brewery is serving tamales. 2917 Olive.

Crafty Chameleon

  • In a Nutshell: The brewpub offers a wide selection from local and national breweries in a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Insider Tip: There’s a constantly rotating selection, but popular choices include local IPAs and stouts. 1384 Clarkson Clayton Center, Ellisville.

Ferguson Brewing Co.

  • In a Nutshell: Established in 2010, Ferguson Brewing is a cornerstone of the community. It offers a wide range of craft beers in a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Try: Pecan Brown Ale, St. Louis Pale Ale
  • Insider Tip: The Growler Club includes special perks such as discounts and exclusive beer releases​. 418 S Florissant, Ferguson.

Great Heart Brewing Company

  • In a Nutshell: John and Helena Valentine’s brewpub serves European-inspired brews. While it currently sells the majority of its beer in house, the brewery hopes to soon offer canned beers to go as well.
  • Try:  German style Helles, Pilsner, Weissbier. 9514 Olive, Olivette.

Mackenzie Brewing

  • In a Nutshell: Mackenzie operates from a three-barrel brewhouse and features a tasting room with a bar and tables to seat 50 people comfortably and eight beers on tap.
  • Try:  American Brown, The Doob. 932 Meramec Station, Valley Park.

Narrow Gauge Brewing Co.

  • In a Nutshell: The hop-forward brewery specializes in high-quality IPAs, along with brewing unique small-batch creations that keep things fresh and exciting.
  • Try: Fallen Flag, Cloud City, OJ Run
  • Inside Tip: Be on the lookout for a new taproom. 1545 N. Highway 67, Florissant.

No Name Brewing Company

  • In a Nutshell: The smallest commercial brewery in the United States, No Name offers eight taps, with a small but solid variety.
  • Try: Voss Kviek, Azacca Pale Ale
  • Insider Tip: The brewery keeps its taps rotating and offers wines, spritzers, and nonalcoholic beverages. 15638 Manchester, Ellisville.

Six Mile Bridge Beer

  • In a Nutshell: With a distinctive and diverse beer menu, the innovative brewery has a reputation for consistency and full-flavored offerings.
  • Try: Blood Orange Wit, Cinnamon Maple Stout
  • Insider Tip: Six Mile offers a full menu, including appetizers, salads, bowls, sandwiches, tacos, sides, and sweets—all designed to complement the craft beers. 11841 Dorsett, Maryland Heights.

Steampunk Brew Works

  • In a Nutshell: Steampunk Brew Works focuses on small-batch, handcrafted beers with a steampunk aesthetic.
  • Try: Rusty Shackle, Constant Clockwork

WellBeing Brewing Company

  • In a Nutshell: Specializing in nonalcoholic craft beers, WellBeing caters to those looking for the taste of great beer without the alcohol. It offers a range of styles that don’t compromise on flavor.
  • Try: Heavenly Body Golden Wheat, Hellraiser Dark Amber, Intentional IPA
  • Insider Tip: Try the beers at local events and wellness festivals across the region. 45 Progress Parkway, Maryland Heights.

  • In a Nutshell: This new brewery and distillery pays tribute to the legendary brewing legacy of the Busch family.

Crossroads Brewing Co.

  • In a Nutshell: Crossroads is a local favorite, known for its community vibe and a variety of craft beers brewed onsite.
  • Try: Litta Bitta Citra, Cosmic Zipper Club. 9995 Winghaven Blvd. O’Fallon, Missouri.

Third Wheel Brewing

  • In a Nutshell: Third Wheel features a spacious taproom and a wide variety of craft beers that are brewed on-site. The menu also includes a range of delicious pub fare to complement the beers.
  • Try: Ophelia’s Wit, Dyslexic API, Trixie
  • Insider Tip: Check their schedule for trivia nights and other fun events. 4008 Winghaven, O’Fallon, Missouri.

Two Plumbers Brewery + Arcade

  • In a Nutshell: If you love beer and classic arcade games, then Two Plumbers is for you. The taproom offers a fun, nostalgic experience, with a variety of house-made beers and vintage games.
  • Try: Paulina, Ol’42
  • Insider Tip: On Thursdays, the brewery hosts Whiskey + Records, featuring new whiskey, bourbon, and Scotch tastings. Collect a stamp on a stamp card each week; after eight stamps, you can enjoy a free pour. 745 Friedens, St. Charles.

METRO EAST

Grafton Winery and Brewhaus

  • In a Nutshell: This winery along the Mississippi brews and sells beer on draft. It offers a small selection, which usually includes a pilsner, wheat beer, stout, IPA, red ale, and seasonal brew. 
  • Try:  Pilsner
  • Insider Tip: The company is first in Illinois to hold both a winemaking permit and a brewer’s permit. 300 W. Main, Grafton, Illinois.

Hopskeller Brewing Company

  • In a Nutshell: Housed in a historic building in downtown Waterloo, the brewery offers a range of craft beers brewed on-site and influenced by the beers of Northern England and the Pacific Northwest.
  • Try: Pale Mild Ale, “Illinois Common” Ale
  • Insider Tip: The brick-oven pizzas are made from scratch. 116 E. 3rd, Waterloo, Illinois.

Millpond Brewing

  • In a Nutshell: This small hometown brewery is dedicated to using local ingredients and presents a carefully curated, well-rounded rotating selection.
  • Try: The Stadt, Pete Zump, Sometimes It Rains
  • Insider Tip: Follow the brewery on social media for food truck events. 308 E. Washington, Millstadt, Illinois.

Old Bakery Beer Company

  • In a Nutshell: Located in a renovated historic bakery, with a spacious taproom and restaurant, Old Bakery produces organic beers and locally sourced food.
  • Try: Citrus Wheat, Porter, North End IPA
  • Insider Tip: Be sure to take a tour of Illinois’ first organic brewery. 400 Landmarks, Alton, Illinois.

Old Herald Brewery & Distillery

  • In a Nutshell: A family-friendly, full-service restaurant inside a craft brewery and distillery. They have a diverse range of beers and spirits to suit every palate.
  • Try: Late Edition, Late Edition, Proofreader Pale
  • Insider Tip: Try the food pairings, which are specially crafted to complement the beer and spirits menu. 115 E. Clay, Collinsville, Illinois.

Shoehorn Brewing

  • In a Nutshell: Shoehorn focuses on crafting classic beer styles with a touch of innovation. 
  • Try: But Knownst To Us, In My Own Time.
  • Insider Tip: The Metro East brewery also offers mead. 225 E. Main, Belleville, Illinois.

Stubborn German Brewing Company

  • In a Nutshell: This family-owned brewery pays homage to its German roots with a range of traditional and innovative beers. The welcoming taproom often hosts local events.
  • Try: Waterloo Wheat, German Pilsner, Dunkel
  • Insider Tip: Come for the beer. Stay for the whiskey, with a large selection of bourbons often available. Stubborn German also brews Oktoberfest beer year-round. 119 S. Main, Waterloo, Illinois.

Big Muddy Brewing

  • In a Nutshell: The small-town brewery offers small-batch craft beer in a welcoming environment.

Lieferbrau Brewery

  • In a Nutshell: The taproom features a well-rounded beer menu that features lighter options, such as pilsners and a cream, to heavier options, including IPAs and stouts. Customers can also purchase canned beer to take home.

Mississippi Culture Oak Fermented Ales

  • In a Nutshell: This newer brewery focuses on “mixed culture oak fermented ales,” including all things tart and funky, made with secondary ingredients such as fruit and spices. The brewery also serves a farmhouse IPA and easier-drinking styles, such as a Belgian blonde.
  • Try: Pearl Street Blonde, At the Cauldron’s Bottom, Dissolution Wave
  • Insider Tip: Check out the seasonal beer cocktails, made with local ingredients and house-made syrups. 201 S. Union, Staunton, Illinois.

Opera House Brewing Company

  • In a Nutshell: As the name implies, the brewery is located in a historic former opera house, where the menu features small batches of creative beers.
  • Try: Copper Rabbit, Posh, Fool’s Spring
  • Insider Tip: Keep an eye on the brewery’s social media channels for upcoming events. 405 S. Main, Hillsboro, Illinois.

Red Rooster Brew Werks & Distillery

  • In a Nutshell: Red Rooster offers a unique combination of craft beer and distilled spirits, with eight beers on tap. 
  • Try: Lakehouse Lounger, Peckerhead IPA
  • Insider Tip: Payments are credit card only, and tipping is not permitted as gratuity is included in the price. 123 E. Seward, Hillsboro, Illinois.

Route 51 Brewing Company

  • In a Nutshell: Route 51 offers a lively atmosphere with live music, a food menu (featuring sandwiches, tacos, and snacks), and handcrafted beers (with many styles, including cream ales).

Scratch Brewing Co.

  • In a Nutshell: This farmhouse brewery is renowned for its innovative use of locally foraged ingredients, such as wildflowers, bark, and mushrooms, which allow the brewers to create unique beers reflective of the local terroir.
  • Try: Dandelion-Ginger Tonic, Chanterelle, Strawberry Rhubarb
  • Insider Tip: Take a brewery tour to learn about the foraging process, and try some exclusive small-batch brews. 264 Thompson, Ava, Illinois.

St. Nicholas Brewing Co.

  • In a Nutshell: Situated in the historic St. Nicholas Hotel, the microbrewery/restaurant offers a selection of craft beers and a full menu, with a cozy and nostalgic atmosphere.
  • Try: 7*11 Blonde Ale, Cadence Porter, Peloton Pale Ale

St. Nicholas Landmark

  • In a Nutshell: At St. Nicholas’ second brewpub, visitors can enjoy a memorable experience in a historic building on the banks of the Mississippi River.
  • Try: 7*11 Blonde Ale, Cadence Porter, Peloton Pale Ale
  • Insider Tip: One of Chester’s oldest buildings, dating back to 1829, the Landmark features original stonework floor and an antique bicycle that beckons to the founders of the St. Nicholas Brewery. 105 E. Walnut, Chester, Illinois.

White Rooster Farmhouse Brewing

  • In a Nutshell: White Rooster is known for its farmhouse ales and sour beers, crafted with an emphasis on local ingredients and traditional methods. The brewery offers a rustic and relaxed setting.

Charleville Brewery and Winery

  • In a Nutshell: One of Missouri’s most scenic brewing experiences. Features a 2,500-square-foot tasting room. 
  • Try: Hoptimistic IPA
  • Insider Tip: Charleville utilizes the wristband-activated iPourIt system, so customers can grab glasses and pour for themselves. 16937 Boyd, Ste. Genevieve.

Jackson Street Brew Co.

  • In a Nutshell: This brewpub focuses on delivering well-rounded brews, including selection of both year-round and seasonal options.
  • Try: Wright Brown Ale, Perry County Porter
  • Insider Tip: Go for a meal, and enjoy the beer. Take a tour to learn more about the brewing process. 7 Jackson, Perryville.

Main and Mill Brewing

  • In a Nutshell: Situated in a historic building in Festus, the family-owned brewery is the definition of a small-town, Main Street–style brewpub. It offers a full menu, with beers on tap and to go.
  • Try: Lil’ Jifforia, Green Chili Ale, Oktoberfestus
  • Insider Tip: Don’t miss the anniversary street festival in October. 240 E. Main, Festus.

Sandy Valley Brewing Co.

  • In a Nutshell: A cozy brewery within the Villa Antonio Winery winery. They are brewing small batch, unique beers that lean experimental. 
  • Try:  Fria, Apriel, Commons.
  • Insider Tip: Go when the weather is nice and bring a chair and sit near the lake. 3660 Linhorst, Hillsboro.

Saxony Hills Brewery

  • In a Nutshell: Serving food and a range of Old World beers (lagers, kolsches, and stouts), the brewery/restaurant offers scenic views and a cozy setting.
  • Try: Oatmeal Stout, Claire-Voyant Kolsch, Munich Dunkel. 303 Maple, Altenburg.

Wild Sun Winery and Brewery

  • In a Nutshell: Wild Sun offers a range of craft beers and wines produced on the scenic estate.
  • Try: Wild Citrus Ale, Sky IPA
