Urban Chestnut Brewing and 4 Hands Brewing are teaming up for an honorable cause this holiday season. The breweries are working with Missouri beverage distributor Major Brands to create a limited-edition charitable beer that benefits local nonprofit Mission: St. Louis.
The collaboration, “Beer 4 Good,” is a blend of two ales, an English Barleywine created by Urban Chestnut and an Imperial Milk Stout from 4 Hands. The beer was aged for more than a year in a custom Maker's Mark barrel created by Major Brands CEO Sue McCollum and her philanthropic team, Women Who Whisky. It includes notes of bourbon, chocolate, sweet caramel, and vanilla.
Urban Chestnut and 4 Hands Brewing plan on rolling out the beer at an event on December 12, “Tap the Barrel.” All proceeds from the event and sales of Beer 4 Good will go to Mission: St. Louis, a nonprofit that addresses deep-seated poverty in the region through education, employment, and community-focused programs. The breweries and Major Brands are aiming to raise $50,000 for the organization. The ale is not available at retail outlets.
This isn’t the first time that 4 Hands and Urban Chestnut have worked with the nonprofit. 4 Hands participated in Mission: St. Louis’ job training and internship program. One of the participants has since joined 4 Hands as an employee. Urban Chestnut has also employed people involved with the nonprofit at the brewery's location in The Grove, in addition to helping individuals and families affiliated with the organization.
“St. Louis has a history of making great beer and a history of making a difference,” Urban Chestnut co-founder David Wolfe said in a statement. "Urban Chestnut is proud to be a part of the Beer 4 Good collaboration, coming together with other amazing St. Louis organizations to help give back and create a better future for our city."
Tickets for the Tap the Barrel event can be purchased at Beer4GoodSTL.org. Donor and event sponsorships start at $250, which include two event tickets and a bottle of Beer 4 Good ale.
