Goshen Coffee opening new location in former Soulard Coffee Garden space

The Illinois-based coffee roaster plans to expand to a second location, at 910 Geyer, in April.

Goshen Coffee Roasters is expanding west, from its flagship café in Edwardsville to a second spot in Soulard.

As first reported by The Telegraph, the Illinois-based coffee company plans to open Goshen Coffee Café at 910 Geyer, the former Soulard Coffee Garden space, which recently announced its closure on Facebook after two decades in business, as first reported by the Riverfront Times.

“Our wholesale side of our business started selling coffee to Soulard Coffee Garden in November,” says Goshen CEO Jennifer Hughey. “The owner let us know that if we were thinking about buying, they would love that.” Hughey and her husband, Mike Bergen, own the company, along with Julie and Jay Beard, her sister and brother-in-law.

Goshen’s new Soulard café will be much like the location in Edwardsville, with a few key differences. While the existing Metro East location has a grab-and-go feel, complete with drive-through service, the forthcoming location will lean toward being a place where patrons can hang out. “The great thing about the Soulard location is the garden, which we have big plans for—there’s seating for at least 40 to 50 people out back.”

The food options (and coffee) will largely resemble the Edwardsville location offerings, with pastries, toasts, and breakfast burritos.

The cafe is set to open in April. The hours are slated to be 6:30 a.m.–2 p.m. Sunday–Friday and 6:30 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturday.

Goshen, which stands for “Good Sh*t Energy,” was founded in 2002 and purchased by Jay and Julie Beard a decade later. In 2020, Beard approached his sister-in-law, Hughey, to come on as CEO, with plans to expand the brand. “For us, it’s all about the coffee and really bringing people together,” says Hughey. “Our roasts and our message really sets us apart.”

In addition to Goshen’s cafés, the brand’s products are available for purchase at area Schnucks, Dierbergs, Whole Foods, Straub’s, and Fresh Thyme locations, as well as The Annex in Webster Groves and directly through the company’s website. You can also purchase Goshen coffee at such restaurants as Rooster and from various City Foundry STL vendors.
