Ask George: Are there any nice restaurants in St. Louis that stay open late on weekends?

There are, but making a late restaurant reservation comes with caveats.

Are there any nice restaurants in St. Louis that stay open late on weekends?

First off, St. Louis is not a late-dining town—even less so since the pandemic—but there are times when a late-night meal is in order (post-theater, -concert, -business meeting, friends/family just arrived, etc.), and finding an open restaurant—any restaurant—can be a challenge.

Second, discussing later-night restaurant reservations allows us to explain the concept of “closing time.” To address the former, you have to understand the latter. When a restaurant states a closing time of 10 p.m., it can mean one of two things: 1) It’s either the time of the last table reservation, or 2) It’s the restaurant’s way of saying, “We’d really like to be wrapping things up at this time.”

Regardless, placing a call ahead of time is always recommended to get the lay of the land because the stated closing time online could be out of date, and you don’t want to stroll into an empty (or near empty) place at 9:50 p.m., when a staffer is mopping or vacuuming.

The only thing more nebulous regarding closing time is when it’s stated as “4 to close,” or, in other words, “it varies,” because restaurants will occasionally close early (due to lack of business, inclement weather, staffing, etc.). In any case, the “4 to close” conundrum requires a call to the restaurant regarding the night in question. One can simply book the latest possible time on the reservation platform, but doing so might mean you’ll be dining in an empty restaurant. Again, a follow-up call is never a bad idea, so both sides know what the other expects.

That said, in answering the question, we’ve construed “late” to mean after “10 p.m.” and included weeknight information as well, if pertinent.

Here’s an interpretive list, as “nice restaurant” is a relative term. The last reservation times for Friday and Saturday are noted.
