St. Louis Magazine’s favorite rooms of 2023

From kitchens to commercial spaces, bathrooms to flower rooms—yep, you read that right—this year we salute the breadth of local talent that’s full of passion for the spaces in which they live, work, and play. Let’s look back on a few of our editor’s favorite rooms from the past 12 months.

Interior designer Annie Brahler transformed an existing designer kitchen into an unfit kitchen, adding such quirky elements as a Spanish fish-cleaning sink, handmade butcher-block countertops, and stand-alone shelves that look like they’ve always been in the house.

It’s impossible to miss the early-’70s pit-style sofa in the middle of the room. The original yellow fabric is like new, says homeowner Dawn Sturmon—“no stains, no tears.” She remembers the moment she spotted the Adrian Pearsall piece on MoModerne’s Instagram feed. She frantically texted Wimsatt to ask whether the measurements would suit the space. “Yellow is such a lovely, happy color, and that sumptuous curve—I snatched it up months before we even started construction,” says Dawn.

The flower farm dates back to at least 1870. Co-owners and fellow farmers Karen “Mimo” Davis and Miranda Duschack have made use of every inch of the 1-acre property, including the restored florist shop storefront and one of the glass greenhouses—no easy feat. “This is a dinosaur,” Davis says.
