In a tweet earlier in the day, The Who mentioned the first time they’d played St. Louis was in 1967, opening for Herman’s Hermits. And what an amazing journey they’ve had since.

“Epic,” “best,” “surreal,” “great,” and “killed it” were among the reactions from fans at the packed Enterprise Center during The Who‘s Friday night visit to St. Louis for their The Who Hits Back! tour.

The intergenerational families and friends attending the concert were on their feet, primed for the legendary band before they even took to the stage. Drummer Zak Starkey, guitarist/backup singer Simon Townshend, Pete Townsend, and Roger Daltrey were all smiles as they casually strolled onto the stage, with Townsend thanking the crowd for coming out to see them as it “hasn’t been too long ago” since the band’s last visit, a 2019 concert at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre.

Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs opened the night around 7:30 p.m. It was the band’s first night on the tour, and Campbell (a member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and co-writer of many of the band’s hits with Petty) thanked those who came early even though they might not be familiar with the group.

“The Who have always been a huge inspiration for me as a musician,” said Campbell a press release, “It is a huge honor to have the opportunity to do the shows with them. It will be a high point of my life.”
