Back in the 1990s, it suddenly became cool to play video games that featured real-life things kids liked doing, instead of, you know, actually doing them. Take for instance Mario Kart, a really fun, really addicting Nintendo video game where kids picked their favorite characters to race around a fantasy world while collecting prizes—instead of driving their actual go-karts.
It would seem we’ve come full circle because now there’s an event where you can dress up as your favorite characters (costumes provided) and drive around a themed track while trying to collect prizes. It’s called the Mushroom Rally, it launched in Los Angeles recently, and it’s coming to St. Louis sometime in the fall. (Oh, and it’s not affiliated with Nintendo in any way, instead stating on its website: “We are a fancy dress go karting experience.”) You can watch a video of the race here:

Drivers are limited to 600, and to sign up, visit the Mushroom Rally’s website. Each participant will get to race at least once, and the winners from each city will be flown to Las Vegas to compete in the finals.
