The Solutions newsletter takes a hard look at the St. Louis region’s problems and explore possible fixes.

A message from senior editor Nicholas Phillips

St. Louis Magazine‘s Solutions newsletter launched in early May 2023.

Our goal with this newsletter is twofold: Be real about the region’s struggles (with reckless drivers, a stagnant economy, failing schools, grinding poverty) while also exploring possible responses. This doesn’t mean we’ll be advocating for any policies, but rather, interrogating them: Which seem to be working locally? Which don’t? Which are other cities trying? Should St. Louis try those, too?

We’re focusing on five areas that are crucial to the region’s future. The first is SAFETY—the extent to which St. Louisans can move around our spaces without fearing harm. Safety fertilizes the soil for GROWTH—businesses and humans becoming more prosperous. Growth would boost EDUCATION—for kids as well as for grown-ups. Education lights the way to FAIRNESS—to those who’ve suffered an injustice. And fairness to future generations demands that we up our SUSTAINABILITY game. All these areas influence one another.

We know we’re on the right track when our stories make you feel it’s possible to do more than just shrug your shoulders at bad news.

In this post-pandemic moment, no one knows which way the region will go. But this much is certain: Things don’t have to be the way they are.

What to expect

The Solutions newsletter…

  • Offers a fresh and conversational look at civic issues and possible fixes.
  • Zooms in on a given social problem and explores how a certain response has succeeded or failed.
  • Highlights responses that are succeeding in other cities and asks public officials why St. Louis hasn’t tried them yet.
  • Distills lessons from policy experiments that readers can use to talk and think about St. Louis in a constructive way.

See previous edition of the newsletter.
