On August 24, the NHL announced that Blues player Patrick Maroon is leaving for Florida. The 31-year-old forward, who was a free agent and not under contract with the Blues, signed a $900,000 one-year contract to play for Tampa Bay Lightning.
After the announcement broke, Maroon, who grew up in Oakville, posted this heartfelt note on his Twitter, and we can't be the only ones who cried a little.
The Blues Organization joined in, calling Maroon, who scored 28 points for the Blues during his one year with the team, a "hometown hero."
Fans on Twitter were emotional, but generally grateful to Maroon for coming home to St. Louis and helping the team win its first Stanley Cup.
This fan was fondly remembering the goal Maroon scored in double overtime during game 7 of the second round of the playoffs against the Dallas Stars, which allowed the Blues to advance to the Western Conference Finals. Honestly, it gets better the more times you watch it.
We're sad to see Maroon go, but at least we always have photos and this video of him eating toasted ravioli from Charlie Gitto's out of the Stanley Cup.
