Aziel Jackson was never expected to contribute so quickly after being acquired from Minnesota United last offseason. But now, after rising through the ranks for St. Louis CITY SC in 2023, Jackson has a new objective as he looks to next year: He’s focused on cementing a starting role, rather than merely trying to make the roster.
Confident in his ability to do so, Jackson is aiming higher now, preparing to take the next step in his career and becoming even more of an impact player in St. Louis.

“It’s something to look forward to,” Jackson says. “Every year gets tougher and tougher, but it’s not anything new. I know there will be a lot of ups and downs next year. So, if I’m mentally and physically prepared, then I’ll be ready for anything that comes my way.”
Jackson has fought hard to earn the opportunities that have been presented to him, even going back to his time in Minnesota. After his breakout MLS NEXT Pro season in 2022, the Loons were prepared to send him away—and CITY head coach Bradley Carnell was cautious about giving Jackson too many responsibilities too soon after his arrival in St. Louis.
Then, after a string of energetic performances—first with CITY2, then with the first team—Jackson moved up in the rotation, often starting as the central attacking midfielder over the last half of the season.
“It’s tough when things aren’t going your way, or you want more.out of yourself, or out of the club,” Jackson says. “But as long as you keep your feet on the ground and stay humble, you’ll see that the roller coaster still goes up.”
When it comes to Jackson’s developmental trajectory, CITY will have a decision to make.
Many have pointed to the club’s desire to strengthen the roster in key areas, but much of that could hinge on how CITY believes Jackson can impact the current midfield, and whether the club sees an opportunity to move him to Europe sooner than later. Jackson does have a desire to return to the continent where he started his career, but it has to be under the right circumstances.
“That’s a goal of mine, to get back to Europe and play in one of the leagues there,” Jackson says. “I’m happy if that happens, but I’m happy to be here. It just depends on what’s best. But right now, I’m here and that’s the best thing for me. To have those [European] clubs be interested in me, it’s a blessing.”
Europe will always be there. In the meantime, Jackson’s ability to continue developing as a reliable midfield option could have a major impact on the outlook of St. Louis CITY SC’s 2024 season.
It will be hard for Jackson to surprise anyone next season, but his relentless work rate, skillful play, and desire to learn, will make him a player to watch.
