Developer Steve Smith on IKEA, City Foundry, and more

Smith discusses the vision for the growing area.

How will City Foundry transform midtown? Built as the Century Foundry, it’s a 200,000-square-foot complex that until recently most people didn’t even know existed. When our $300 million investment is complete, we’re projecting 2,000 jobs and $80 million of retail sales on the site.

How does IKEA fit into midtown’s future? Without question, City Foundry would not be happening without IKEA. We could not convince national retailers that this was a good investment without the credibility that IKEA provides.

Where does Saint Louis University fit in? The university is in the business of education, so the surrounding amenities have to come from private investment. The SLU redevelopment plan gives us confidence that development in Midtown will be complementary to the experience we’re trying to create. We don’t want suburban-style development surrounding the Foundry.

What’s your opinion of a trolley going through midtown? Philosophically, we’re supportive of being as car-optional as possible and being accessible to all means of transportation, whether through a streetcar or our connection to Great Rivers Greenway.
