“I use the phrase ‘epic’ all the time to describe our shows,” says El Monstero bassist Kevin Gagnepain. "Is that bad?"
For this Saturday's show, the adjective seems particularly apt, given the venue: Art Hill.
The Pink Floyd tribute band has been performing for 15 years, selling out The Pageant and packing Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. But this weekend marks the band's debut on Forest Park's prime real estate. “The environment is perfect for the music of El Monstero," says Gagnepain.
After Fair St. Louis moved its festivities to Forest Park earlier this year, it seemed clear that Art Hill was meant for more than just sledding, movies, and the symphony. Describing the setting, which he calls a natural amphitheater, Gagnepain sounds something like Captain Planet—albeit with a bass guitar and a mission to rock.
“We’re out in the elements," he says. "The stage is built on the banks of water. You’re gonna be sitting on earth on Art Hill. We’re surrounded by air. There’s always plenty of fire at an El Monstero show. The elements are all coming together.”
As El Monstero's popularity has grown, so have the theatrics. Today, elaborate sets, dancing girls, and dazzling pyrotechnics are part of the show. The band varies its set list for each concert, playing both beloved hits—"Another Brick in the Wall," "Comfortably Numb," "Shine on You Crazy Diamond"—and more obscure songs for diehards.
Having done big summer shows beginning four years ago, El Monstero decided it was time to add a summer-festival staple. “Food trucks have been something we’ve talked about doing at our summer shows before,” Gagnepain says. “It’s a great way to have food available on Art Hill.”
Brazil Express, Family Foods, Go Gyro Go, Holy Crepe, Kona Ice, Russo’s Trucktoria, Slice of the Hill, Steak Louie, The Ques Brothers, and White Castle will be among the onsite vendors.
Tickets are $30 in advance or $40 on the day of the show. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m. Click here for more information.
