We're exactly three weeks out from the solar eclipse, a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event, on August 21. And it just so happens that St. Louis is between two sought-after destinations in the path of totality: St. Joseph, Missouri, and Carbondale, Illinois. Those two cities will be within the area of the moon's shadow, which means they'll see up to two minutes of complete darkness.
In honor of the rare event, it's estimated that Missouri will receive between 322,000 and 1,290,000 visitors. And they all presumably need a place to stay, right?
If a reasonably priced hotel is already booked, some last-minute travelers might turn to Airbnb. With only three weeks until the eclipse, however, the pickings are slim. Here are five options (available at press time):
An $1,150-per-night three-bedroom home—dubbed the "TOTAL-ity Package": In Grantsburg, Illinois, located about an hour southeast from Carbondale, enjoy a three-bedroom, two-bath home that's available for a cool $1,150 per night during the eclipse. It can accommodate up to eight eclipse seekers. Come for the path-of-totality pun; stay for the hot tub and three flatscreen TVs.
A gorgeous brick home that's $6,000 per night: In-demand prices are expected for such a rare event, and this Carbondale estate is no exception. If you have a couple grand handy, then you and a party of up to 16 could enjoy an entire five-bedroom property with a pool, outdoor kitchenette, and horses.
A $5,000-per-night cabin on the lake: Though this lakefront property can only accommodate five guests, it does offer the use of a pontoon boat, kayak, and gas grill for your small eclipse party. Located in Marion, Illinois, about a half hour east of Carbondale, the home offers one bed and one sofa bed. Consider packing a sleeping bag.
A farmhouse on a hill for $1,200 per night: Guests who come in Sunday can receive a catered BBQ dinner. The house sits on 200 acres of farmland in De Kalb, Missouri, about 30 minutes south of St. Joseph. The house can accommodate up to eight guests in its four bedrooms.
An unfurnished apartment for $3,000 per night: Enjoy those two minutes of total darkness, and then retreat back to a two-bedroom apartment with no furniture. The ad recommends guests bring air mattresses, sleeping bags, or other bedding "for their comfort in sleeping."
