We all know the holidays can be stressful, but, believe it or not, they don't have to be. To help you chill out a little this season, we've put together six tips for coping with the pressure.
1. Make a list and check it twice. Making a list will keep you organized, and sometimes, just being able to check things off gives us some satisfaction.
2. Set aside time for yourself. Read a book or watch a movie, perhaps a holiday favorite to get you in the spirit (maybe indulge in some spirits, too). Keep up an exercise routine, as well. Those endorphins will help you de-stress.
3. Don’t overspend. Add up the numbers and decide what you can afford before splurging. Perhaps you can suggest a gift exchange for your extended family rather than buying for everyone. Draw names, or make a game of it (like a white elephant gift exchange). If you really want to do something thoughtful and special, try making your gifts (oh, the wonderful world of Pinterest)—photo albums, bath bombs, even a bin of baked goods can make a great gift.
4. Don’t overcommit. If you stretch yourself thin by going to too many holiday parties or plan on having Four Christmases, just say no. You’re just one person, after all.
5. Don’t be a perfectionist. Remember that list? Find something that isn’t entirely necessary, and cross it off. Let some things go. Odds are, none of your guests will notice if you ironed the curtains, anyway.
6. Last but not least…enjoy the season! There are certain things that only come around once a year, so make sure you enjoy them. Go Christmas caroling, see awesome light displays, bake some cookies and attempt to decorate them, go to a tree farm and pick a tree out with your family, go ice skating or build a snowman. Just have fun. ‘Tis the season, after all!
