May 3–6: Storytelling Festival

Let the pros tell your kids a story this weekend. The 38th Annual Storytelling Festival stretches across several venues in the metro area, such as public libraries, the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Old Courthouse, and even a special story time with Curious George at the Public Media Commons. Most events are free. Some require an RSVP. Check the festival schedule for details on times, age ranges, and locations.

May 4–7: Greater St. Louis Book Fair

Take your kids to a literary treasure hunt this weekend at the nation’s oldest and biggest charity book sale. With thousands of books to browse through, you’re sure to find something interesting to take home. Fair proceeds benefit local nonprofit education and literacy programs. $10 admission on opening night. May 6: Monthly Saturday Opening at the Compton Hill Water Tower

Take the kids on a magical climb into a real fairy castle that overlooks the city—or at least that’s what you can tell them as you tour the Compton Hill Water Tower. Built in 1898, the 100-foot tall  French Romanesque tower camouflages a standpipe from the city’s early water works. The tower is only open once a month and is not handicap accessible. Noon–4 p.m. Tickets $5 a person. Compton Hill Reservoir Park, 3501 Russell.

May 6: Monster Machines Day & Bicycle Skills Course

Test your kids’ cycling skills, then get up close and personal with a police car, bulldozer, fire truck and more. Certified cycling instructors will help kids through the cycle course and can assist with helmet inspections and fittings. New helmets will be available for $11. RSVP required for helmet fittings only. Bring your own bike. Free. 9 a.m. to noon. Des Peres Park. 12325 Manchester.

May 6: Sweetology Grand Opening Party

The sweetest spot in town has a new location. There will be giveaways, cake decorating demos, and a visit by Princess Belle and Sleeping Beauty. Plus, Sammy J will be making balloon sculptures for the kids. Free. Normal rates apply for cupcake decorating ($4.99 per maker and 33.99 for six cupcakes or cookies. Includes unlimited icing, 50 kinds of sprinkles, tools, and clean up.) 10 a.m.–6 p.m. 1232 Town and Country Crossing.
