5 things to know about the City Museum’s upcoming aquarium

Called an “artquarium,” the 11,000-square-foot addition will feature slides, art, and 10,000 seahorses.

We are still eagerly anticipating the opening of Union Station’s $45 million aquarium (and its rare aquatic animals and three new restaurants), but the City Museum has given us similar news to hold us over. The museum, many St. Louisans’ favorite playground for adults and children alike, is starting their 2019 spring and summer season by adding more art in the already-artsy museum—including an aquarium dubbed an “artquarium.” Here’s what you need to know.

1. The 11,000-square-foot addition will feature slides, tunnels, and climbers.

2. In the “artquarium,” you’ll find plenty of fish—including about 10,000 seahorses.

3. The Museum is even inviting onlookers to come watch the crew of sculptors, muralists, masons, welders, and mosaic artists as they build, which the City Museum offered back with the construction of MonstroCity.

4. The Artquarium is open seven days a week and located second floor, right after the sea-monster mosaics. While not entirely finished, the museum is inviting guests to watch as they build.

5. Other installations for the season include an expansion of George Grant Elmslie’s work and a secret entrance to MonstroCity through a fire engine outside the City Museum’s front door.
