The New Wedding Cake Alternative: Pie

It’s not uncommon for any large family dinner to include pie: pecan pie for Christmas dinner, pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving…and the bride and groom’s favorite pies for their wedding? It makes sense: The true pie lovers of this world aren’t going to prefer everyday wedding cake. Recently, some couples have chosen to ditch the cake altogether and serve several varieties of pie, pleasing both themselves and their guests.

Jane Callahan, owner of Pie Oh My! says, “What we love to hear is brides and grooms who come in and tell us, ‘We just don’t really like cake. We like pie better. And we want to have that instead for our wedding.’ The confines of wedding planning are much less rigid than they used to be, and it’s a wonderful trend that people are choosing not to do everything in a cookie cutter kind of way.”

Callahan works with her customers to make unique varieties of pie in their favorite flavors, and in styles that match the theme of their weddings. While Callahan mentioned one bride who opted for six different varieties of pumpkin pie, she is also catering a wedding this upcoming weekend that includes strawberry basil pie with balsamic vinegar and apple green chili pie with a pecan crumble.

Pie Oh My! also offers individual serving size pies so that couples can provide guests with several different flavors to sample, displaying all of them at one station—which Callahan calls a pie bar. This saves the potentially messy pie cutting and encourages guests to leave their tables and mingle with one another.
