On Saturdays and Sundays, Sweets & Sourdough offers a fresh batch of breads and pastries at a self-serve roadside cart in West County. Heather Tuttle includes sourdough in all of her small-batch sweet and savory treats, which are available for pre-order or in person until sold out. Here’s what to know before you go.
The Concept

Tuttle launched Sweets & Sourdough in October. During weekends, the cart rolls out at 1678 Creve Coeur Mill Road. Early in the week, pre-order menus launch via Hotplate, a platform built for food drops. Patrons can order in advance there. Alternatively, “the cart is always full when we open on the weekends in the morning,” Tuttle says.
While many cottage bakers get their starts at local farmers’ markets, Sweets & Sourdough offers a regular neighborhood destination where people can walk up and gather. “We’ve had people waiting on our sidewalk at 8 a.m. in their pajamas,” Tuttle says. “Since we live on this busy road that leads to a soccer park, it’s been a great place for people to stop by and grab a loaf. And who doesn’t love carbs?”

Her whole family pitches in. “My husband, Andrew, is really the muscle behind everything—doing the dishes and pushing the cart out for me on the road,” she says. “Even my 5-year-old son is making coffee that’s free for people on the weekends to earn his allowance.”
In addition to bakery items, the cart offers homemade jams, fresh-cut flowers, and more.
The Menu
Rustic sourdough loaves (in full and mini sizes), biscuits, and cinnamon rolls have proven to be the bakery’s most popular products—so much so that Tuttle recently acquired a commercial-size Simply Bread oven to keep up with the demand. Her sourdough starter—a gift from a dear family friend—is now older than her youngest child.
Another Sweets & Sourdough staple is a butter bread loaf, which features an entire stick of butter shredded into the dough. “It kind of tastes like a croissant. There’s so much goodness in every bite,” says Tuttle, adding that her products can be sliced, frozen, and reheated easily “for everything from grilled cheese to avocado toast.”
“We do a lot of organic products, and we’re changing the items seasonally,” she says. “Our goal is to bring joy to people and give them good quality food with clean, simple ingredients.”
Classic home-style breakfast items include cinnamon rolls and muffins in rotating flavors such as strawberry and blueberry-lemon. Pastry offerings can include items such as cookies, croissants, scones, and cupcakes. “Adding sourdough does give a subtle tangy taste and rich flavor to classic treats, which I think kind of gives it a special depth,” she says.
The Backstory
A St. Louis native, Tuttle went to design school in New York and worked in children’s apparel for several years. She previously served as a senior lead designer for Build-A-Bear. “We joke that I always wanted my own brand but thought that it’d be shoes or clothing, not bread,” she says. “I started doing sourdough several years ago, and my love for it just grew.”
After she had her second child, Tuttle decided to leave the corporate world to spend more time with her kids. “I wanted to stay home with them but also wanted to find a way to help support our family as well,” she says.
She serves the baked goods from a small bakery stand constructed from an antique wardrobe. “My husband found the cart for free at the Salvation Army, and we thought we’d design it, build it out, and just see what happens,” Tuttle says.

The response was larger than she could have imagined. “The love and support has been amazing. I think we’re open to wherever this takes us, but we would love to grow and someday offer our biscuits and cookies in grocery stores,” says Tuttle, who is working to convert her detached garage into a bakery. “I think St. Louis is such a great market for that. We’d love to share sourdough treats with as many people as possible.”
