St. Louis Black Restaurant Week is back.

In September 2019, Frank Williamson organized the city’s first iteration of St. Louis Black Restaurant Week. From October 31–November 7, he’s partnered with area restaurants to launch the second iteration.

“It’s more important now to shop small and to shop with Black businesses,” he says. “COVID has changed a lot of things for our community. We need the help. Our businesses need help. Black Restaurant Week is here to shine a light on small Black businesses who need the community’s help right now.”

Traditionally, the restaurant week model features a variety of three-course meals priced between $25 and $45. Veering from that formula (and partly as a response to the pandemic), St. Louis Black Restaurant Week offers a reduced-price opportunity to visit both established and recently opened restaurants.

For example, Turn in Midtown is offering two dishes, a Harvest Hash (sweet potatoes, turnips, butternut squash, Yukon gold potatoes, two poached eggs, dill hollandaise) for $14, as well as seasonal pancakes with maple pumpkin compote for $10.

Diner’s Delight has a chicken dinner, two sides, and a drink for $9.

House of Jollof, a West African restaurant in Florissant, is featuring a chicken wrap (with Jollof rice, chicken, bell peppers, lettuces, house dressing) and fried plantains for $9.99 (bowls for $11.99).

The most timely dish of the week, though, has to be the Instagram-worthy #DemocracyDog from Steve’s Hot Dogs. A collaboration with Apotheosis Comics & Lounge, the $8 red-white-and-blue dog is topped with creamy bleu and white macaroni, fresh tomatoes, and blue corn tortilla chips.
