A new spot for Korean fare recently opened in Lindenwood Park. Sean and Erica Park (formerly of Chicken Seven and Café Ganadara) opened the Korean Food Mart (4412 Jamieson) in early March in the former Mom’s Deli location. The new establishment serves Korean crispy fried chicken, mochi ice cream, and specialty lunches, in addition to cook-your-own ramen stations and to-go lunch boxes.
Here’s what to know before you go.
The Menu
A deli case holds four ready-to-go lunch boxes that were favorites at Café Ganadara and that refer to the first four consonants in the Korean alphabet:
- GA: Bulgogi beef, rice, stir fried potatoes, kimchi, and japchae—stir fried glass sweet potato noodles
- NA: Stir-fried pork belly with rice, stir fried potatoes, kimchi, and japchae
- DA: Stir-fried spicy chicken with green onions, cabbage, rice, green peppers, and Korean rice cakes
- RA: Tender breaded and fried pork cutlet with brown onion gravy, rice, kimchi, japchae, stir fried potato, and pickled radish.
Korean fried wings and drumsticks are available in three sizes (small, medium, and large) and come with a choice of dipping sauces: soy garlic, spicy soy, or yangnyeom (a sticky, sweet, and spicy glaze). Another chicken dish, Rice Crispy Chicken, features chicken breast pieces with a crunchy rice coating and any of the above spices.
The Parks have also added vegan and gluten-free options, including gluten-free fried chicken breast strips with a crisp potato flour crust and a special soy sauce, as well as gluten-free ramen noodles.
The Atmosphere
With 10 seats inside and a 50-seat patio, Korean Food Market is primarily a market. Upon entering, guests can glance to the left to see the cash register, drinks, and deli case, as well as a case holding an assortment of ramen add-ins. To the right, rows of colorful ramen are packed in cubbies; high-tech machines will cook the noodles, flavoring packet, and add-ins in four minutes. Just past the ramen packets is a hot case with pork soup dumplings, seafood pancakes, kimchi pancakes, and steamed rice. A cold case is nearby, as well as a cooler of drinks.
Sean oversees the kitchen while Erica is typically in the front of house. Renato Flamenco, who was previously at Café Ganadara, works closely with Erica. “I call him my Vietnamese brother,” she says. “He’s worked for us for two years now, and he’s always been so supportive.”
The Parks’ two children add to the lively atmosphere at the Mart – their daughter Olivia, 8, and their son Barron, 3. You’ll find them after school and on weekends coloring or building things in the café.
