The Schlafly family is taking the reins of The Saint Louis Brewery, the parent company behind one of the city’s oldest craft breweries, Schlafly Beer.
David Schlafly and a group of local investors bought a controlling interest in The Saint Louis Brewery. David will assume the role of director while Tom Schlafly, his cousin and a co-founder of The Saint Louis Brewery, will remain chairman of the board.

“The brewery has always led the craft beer movement in St. Louis,” David said. “Assuming the role of director allows me to merge my own skills with an outstanding brewery and lead in community and civic development and making great beer.”
Sage Capital, a private equity firm, and several current and former employees sold some of their units in The Saint Louis Brewery, giving David a majority stake. Tom and Sage Capital are now minority stakeholders who are represented on the company’s board of directors.
The change in leadership comes a few months after The Saint Louis Brewery launched a new line of cocktail-inspired malt beverages, Saint Louis Crafted Cocktails. A departure from Schlafly’s core beer lineup, the products included a White Russian Wheat Ale made with vanilla and lactose.
“We’ll continue to evolve this brewery, from elements of leadership to engaging with the community,” David said. “Schlafly is well-known for the quality of its beer, and it will remain a huge emphasis as a family-run business.”
