On an ideal night for alfresco dining, we offer an alternative: Pack a picnic, and head to Concordia Seminary for a free carillon concert, one of the most under-the-radar outdoor events of the season. The hour-long concerts are free and open to the public. (See the schedule here.)
A carillon is a series of tuned bells installed in a tower and played by a carillonneur, who plays the instrument by striking a keyboard using loosely closed fists. This summer marks the 53rd anniversary of the installation of Concordia’s carillon (one of only 170 in North America). From 7 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday night in June, acclaimed carillonneurs from across the country conduct concerts there.

So why mention a bell concert in SLM’s dining coverage? Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics to enjoy in the main quadrangle or on the seminary grounds near Luther Statue. Parker’s Table and Starr’s are located minutes from the seminary, and both can provide ample cheese, charcuterie, beverages, and other accoutrements proper for such an occasion. (Note that Parker’s Table closes at 6 p.m.)
