We know the cold months have officially arrived when we get start to get requests for stews, chowders, chilis, meatloafs, and “a really good potpie,” which happened right on cue last week. We’re not sure why, but we tend to scratch cook the first four dishes but purchase potpies (maybe it goes back to our Swanson and Banquet days of yore).

Retail (frozen, unless otherwise indicated):
- Lydia’s Ladle: 16-ounce chicken pot pies are $8.99 at Straub’s. Also available at Smokehouse Market and select Schnucks and Dierbergs stores
- Starr’s: 6-inch natural chicken, lentil, and prime steak (coming soon), priced from $8.99.
- Sugaree Baking Co.: chicken (6 and 10-inch) and Guinness beef (6-inch only). Store open only on Fridays and Saturdays
- Truffles Butchery Market: 6-inch chicken pot pies in the fresh deli case are $15.95. Biggest supply on Thursdays.
- Winslow’s Table: 9-inch chicken pot pies are generally available in the prepared foods case for $32.
Restaurants (eat-in or to-go), standard menu item:
- Big Chief Roadhouse: $14, served with a small salad or soup
- Colleen’s: $17 each, chicken only. The crust includes “Scarborough Fare” herbs (parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme).
- Grace Meat + Three: $10 pot pie specials (served in mini cast-iron skillets with a biscuit topper) are available occasionally on Sundays.
- Kentucky Fried Chicken: the price of KFC’s version varies by location, but in St. Louis expect to pay $7.19 or so.
- Mimi’s Café: chicken pot pie with a pastry crust is $16.99
- The Piccadilly at Manhattan: $16 for chicken, $17 for short rib, plus seafood pot pie (Fridays only)
- Seven at the Seven Gables Inn: chicken pot pie is $18 on the lunch, brunch, and dinner menu
- SqWire’s: chicken is $17 at lunch, $24 at dinner.
- Timothy’s: Lobster pot pie in a puff pastry crust, their best selling item, is $20
