Design & Detail, a one-stop shopping destination for designer resources and services—including carpets and wallcoverings, fabrics and furniture—is expanding its showroom at 2731 Sutton in Maplewood.
The growth of specific trade categories, as well as crowding on the floor, necessitated more space, says Melinda Klinghammer, president and owner.

“When designers actually say, ‘I have to come back later because there are too many people in the department, I can’t shop very well. That’s when I knew that I needed more room because they were coming back but they had to come back,” she says.
The new space will include the addition of the building’s second floor, doubling the square footage from 10,000 to 20,000 square feet. It will feel open and airy with some walls added to allow support to hang wallpaper displays. Klinghammer expects the new space to be up and running by the end of the month. “I hate being on two different floors but I love this building. I love the location and the expense of a move would just be crazy,” she says. Klinghammer, who recently purchased a percentage of the property, is now part owner of the stylish brick building.

Carpet, wallcoverings, outdoor living, and the furniture-programs departments will all move upstairs. Meeting and office space will also be located on the second floor. The expansion makes way for a few new product lines, notably the Kravet family of brands, making Design and Detail its exclusive carrier in St. Louis. It will be shown on the first floor where the carpet department used to reside. “It’s very cool,” says Klinghammer. The high-end French brand Élitis will make its St. Louis debut at the showroom, as will North Carolina-based Tomlinson Furniture.
“I don’t want to bring a lot of new things in, just to take away from what I already have,” says Klinghammer. “If I do bring in other lines they’ll be lines that I need that don’t have a presence here.”
The last time the showroom underwent a significant growth spurt was in 2016, when it expanded to 10,000 square feet and took over the building’s first floor.
