Ask Veronica: How to spruce up your front entrance

Interior designer Dana King shares easy tips for welcoming guests to your home.

I don’t want to invest too much time or money, but I do want to improve the look of my front entry before the holiday season gets underway. Any ideas you could share? Amy, Sunset Hills

Small details make a big difference. I learned the power of this statement last year when I made the decision to add more lighting to the front entrance. Doing so made it safer for guests to walk in and out of the house, and also improved my home’s curbside appeal. But I’m curious to know what a local designer says. Last week, I chatted with Dana King, owner of Dana King Design Build, at an event celebrating the launch of a new rug collection, and so she was top of mind as someone who I know would be full of good ideas. Here’s what she had to say.

“A fresh coat of paint on the door really makes a difference,” says King. “Matte finish is popular and fresh.” According to King, paint has improved such that the right brand in a matte finish is also very durable. “New hardware and lighting are the jewels. Focus a flood light on the front door at night and you ramp up the ambiance,” she says. “Lighted pathways and up-lighting the house, in general, adds appeal and safety.” Choose planter boxes or a bench to not only beautify the area but also because they’re “perfect for hiding delivery boxes,” she says. King’s last piece of advice? Opt for a dramatic outdoor rug to cover the porch, rather than a typical small doormat.
