Quick, Easy Chocolate-covered Pretzels

They can be decorated to suit, and are a great alternative to the blobs of red and blue Jell-o that usually dominate the picnic table this time of year.

I’m always looking for something fun to do with my kids to celebrate the holidays throughout the year. The 4th of July is no exception, and I’ve found a fun way to show our patriotism without succumbing to my least favorite dessert of them all—red and blue blobs of Jell-o, usually in some form of a mold, trying to look festive. Maybe it is because I was a sickly kid, but I associate Jell-o with being stuck on the sofa watching my neighbors play outside, and I don’t want it ruining my holidays.

Recently, I was in Florida and my friend’s mother brought over a treat for us—bite-sized twist pretzels covered in chocolate that were then rolled in an assortment of toppings—chocolate shavings, coconut, chopped Heath bar, and sprinkles, to name of few. A fun idea for a little treat, I decided to adapt them to the 4th of July.  My kids love making them, and I hope yours will too.

Start with regular twist pretzels and dip them thoroughly in either melted white chocolate or white almond bark (found in the baking section—surprisingly enough, there is no actual almond in this product). Make sure they are coated completely. Place them on a cookie sheet lined with waxed paper and cover with red, white and blue sprinkles. Flip them over and repeat, then let them harden. (This can also be done with pretzel rods or even graham crackers, if you prefer.)

Place them on a plate, cover with cellophane and ribbons, and bring them to your next gathering. They also make cute individual servings if you want to hand them out to friends.

Make some fun this holiday, but leave the red, white and blue Jello to the hospitals. They are sure to have plenty of visitors this weekend.
