French teachers use a little diagram called the “house of être” (“house of being”) to help pupils remember “to be” verbs: naître (to be born); mourir (to die); aller (to go); rentrer (to return) and so on. Aside from providing a cute mnemonic device, the diagram reminds us how important our houses really are, how profoundly our surroundings affect us. Some of us get blue in the suburbs among perfect, blissful lawns. Some people travel too often to warrant owning a house; some lose their mind without backyard dirt to dig in. This year, between county development that hasn’t quit and the resurgence of the city, it’s as easy to find an urban abode as a suburban one.
“If you want to live in the city, you can find whatever type of housing you’re looking for,” affirms Deputy Mayor Barbara Geisman. “And you can find the services that go with that housing close to where you live. So we want luxury, affordable, new construction, historic rehab, rental, for sale, condominiums … I think another thing we’re really pleased with is that all those different housing types are now blossoming.”
We couldn’t be more pleased either, though that blossoming market presented some mighty big challenges when it came to cataloguing what was available. We didn’t include sold-out buildings (though often a unit will open up down the line), or buildings with less than three units. If we didn’t receive all the information we needed from a developer by deadline, we did not list the property; if the plans were still on the drafting table (like Ballpark Village), we passed on those as well. If the building’s amenities weren’t unusual (like a dog park or prepaid Visa card, for example), we didn’t include the category for that building. And, regrettably and undoubtedly, some ventures were inadvertently overlooked, and for that, we apologize.
Of course, because of the fluctuating housing market, things may have changed by the time this is printed. We’ll post this information online and do our best to update, delete or add listings as need be. —Stefene Russell and Sarah Klein with additional reporting by Betsy Zatkulak and Christy Marshall
