In Blueberry Hill's Duck Room on Wednesday night, Will Varley and opener Gavin M., gave a laidback performance, rife with deep personal meaning and audience interaction.
Gavin M., a St. Louis native, opened the night by sharing a collection of songs that will be on his upcoming album. Switching between the guitar and piano, he shared lyrics like “Sittin’ around the table spewing American fables ... I want to stay another day on Belgrave Road." St. Louis is eager to hear more from this homegrown musician.

Shortly after, Varley got on stage and displayed a humility that is not often seen in 32-year-olds in his industry, though the two tours he did on foot in 2011 and 2013 might have something to do with that. In between songs like “The Sound of the Markets Crashing” and more lighthearted ditties like “The Self Checkout Shuffle,” Varley shared his experience as a new dad and pondered about space, stars, and the universe.
Accompanied by only a guitar, Varley kept the audience connected and laughing (“every microphone has a smell, this one smells like Fitz’s root beer”).
While introducing new songs like "Innsbrook in the Mist” and “Statues,” Varley discussed how many of his ideas come from watching too many YouTube videos.
After his performance, it is apparent that Varley is a man you could sit down and have a beer or two with, and also happens to be an incredible singer, songwriter, and showman.
