Read This Now: A Friend of King Neptune by Wm. Stage

Those who enjoyed Stage’s previous work—or who just need a summertime read with an exciting ensemble—can look forward to this new novel.

Wm. Stage’s latest novel, A Friend of King Neptune, out May 25 from Floppinfish Publishing Co., is a Herculean effort. Not in its length or scope—it’s a tightly written story and a quick read—but in its subject. The author and longtime local columnist has taken some inspiration from the epic myth, added a colorful cast of characters, and dropped it into St. Louis and Southern Illinois for a story that’s both exciting and familiar.

The story follows Leo Kraszewski, known as “Dingus,” and his varied companions, particularly Francis Lenihan, an old Army buddy who’s made his way into a respectable career as a process server. Dingus, however, is much the same as he was nearly 20 years ago, when the two served together in the Army Medical Corps: impulsive, a bit unruly, but strangely wise. His journey stretches through Southern Illinois cornfields, into Dogtown bars, and past myriad St. Louis landmarks. As the story unfolds, readers will get a kick out of checking off all the familiar faces and places our hero encounters.

During his wandering, Dingus is assigned to steal back a precious stolen object. That isn’t the start or end of Dingus’ many trials, but it does lead to some of the book’s best scenes.

A Friend of King Neptune is Stage’s fourth novel and 14th book. Those who enjoyed Stage’s previous work—or who just need a summertime read with an exciting ensemble—can look forward to this one.

For folks who wish to see Stage in person, the author has several upcoming signings scheduled for the release, including events at Pat Connolly Tavern June 1, Seamus McDaniel’s Dogtown on June 7, Riley’s Pub on June 21, and Spring Bookstore & Cafe on July 17.
