When one thinks about a doctor who specializes in women’s health, OB/GYN services might immediately come to mind. Yet women have many additional health-related needs and concerns, from the way that patients experience diseases and differences in musculoskeletal makeup to changing hormonal levels and the demands they experience in their jobs and at home.
Women have a unique set of needs that aren’t always met by general medical offices. Gender-specific physician groups, however, can cater to women’s needs, with a variety of female care services under one roof, often with extended hours, which is beneficial to busy women juggling hectic schedules.
Small private practices, such as the one run by daughter-father team Drs. Laura Pignotti and Blase Pignotti, can provide a higher level of care to women-only clientele. In addition to gynecological and prenatal care, the practice also treats menopausal health concerns, provides cosmetic procedures such as Botox and liposuction, and performs minimally invasive surgeries in house. And the practice offers early-morning, evening, and weekend hours to make it easier for women to prioritize their health and self care.
“Women always put everyone else before themselves,” says Dr. Laura Pignotti. “If they dont take care of themselves, no one else will.”
That elevated level of care might be the biggest differentiator in a female-focused physician’s office. In the Pignottis' practice, every patient is seen by either Dr. Laura Pignotti or Dr. Blase Pignotti. Such individualized care is rare but important, says Dr. Laura Pignotti. “We have a one-on-one, personal relationship with every client,” she says. “We talk about insecurities, fears, and anxieties with them. Building these relationships and having conversations about these topics is very important, especially during the pandemic, with the health concerns that people have. Having a close relationship with each patient builds trust and allows them to be advocates for themselves and to ask the important questions they need to voice in order to get the care they need.”
