Inside the Independent Physicians Network strengthening St. Louis healthcare

A group of independent specialists is coming together through Arbor Fertility to strengthen collaboration, expand knowledge sharing, and improve care across the region.

When patients think about healthcare, they often picture a single physician visit. What they rarely see are the relationships between doctors behind the scenes that shape the quality of their care. Across St. Louis, connections between independent physicians are quietly influencing how care is delivered.

The Alliance of Independent Physicians of St. Louis, founded by Dr. Robert Hacker, a vascular surgeon, is seeking to strengthen collaboration, preserve autonomy,  and support the future of medicine in an increasingly complex healthcare landscape. By coming together across specialties, the organization aims to give independent practices a stronger collective voice while fostering innovation, connection, and long-term sustainability throughout the St. Louis hospital and medical community.

The Strength of Independent Medicine

A shift in healthcare is emerging from an unexpected place: smaller, independent physician practices. In these settings, physicians often have greater flexibility to make decisions based on individual patient needs, while building stronger long-term relationships and continuity of care. Research continues to support the value of independent medicine, highlighting benefits such as lower physician burnout, stronger patient engagement, and more coordinated care experiences.

In St. Louis, that momentum continues to grow through organizations such as the Alliance of Independent Physicians of St. Louis (AIPS), where independent specialists are coming together to strengthen collaboration, innovation, and long-term sustainability across the medical community.

Building Stronger Connections Across Specialties

A new level of coordination is emerging through the Alliance of Independent Physicians of St. Louis (AIPS), a growing organization connecting physicians across specialties. The group includes physicians with expertise in spine surgery, vascular surgery, otolaryngology, reproductive medicine, internal medicine, neurology, and more.

As part of this growing movement, Dr. Shvetha Zarek, founder and medical IVF director of Arbor Fertility, is proud to help bring awareness to the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the role that women’s health plays across every stage of care. By creating stronger physician networks, organizations such as AIPS help encourage continued education, innovation, and patient advocacy across specialties.

That collaborative philosophy reflects the mission of the Alliance of Independent Physicians of St. Louis: connecting patients with affordable, high-quality independent healthcare while strengthening collaboration across the medical community.

“St. Louis has an incredibly strong medical community, and organizations like AIPS play an important role in bringing physicians, hospitals, and healthcare leaders together,” says Dr. Robert Hacker. “These connections help foster innovation and ultimately strengthen patient care.”

The impact of physician collaboration reaches far beyond meetings or networking events. Through organizations such as the Alliance of Independent Physicians of St. Louis, specialists across disciplines are able to exchange ideas, share real-world experience, and strengthen communication between practices in ways that can directly influence patient care. These connections help encourage continued learning, innovation, and more coordinated care throughout the St. Louis medical community.

“I’m honored to serve on the board of AIPS and to connect with other physicians who are leaders in their respective fields,” says Zarek. “Opportunities to collaborate and share knowledge ultimately help strengthen the care we provide to our patients.”

Patients may never see the conversations happening behind the scenes, but they often feel the results through stronger coordination, broader treatment perspectives, and a more connected healthcare experience. As independent physicians continue building relationships across specialties, they are helping shape a more collaborative future for healthcare in St. Louis.
