Chattanooga, Tenn.
Twenty years ago, Chattanooga’s riverfront was a no-man’s-land. Now the downtown riverfront boasts a 15-mile river walk, an aquarium, housing, and music festivals, catalyzing the revitalization of Chattanooga’s entire downtown area.
Louisville, Ky.
Louisville’s master plan for redevelopment along the Ohio River included several similar elements to MVVA’s Arch grounds plan, including expansive parks and a lawn that opened a path to downtown Louisville. “The basic design philosophy was to shorten the visual and physical distance to the water’s edge,” says Waterfront Development Corporation’s Mike Kimmel. “It’s really changed the entire character of our city.”
Wichita, Kan.
Wichita spent $20 million in 2007 on the Arkansas River Corridor Master Plan, which renovated the 44-foot-tall Keeper of the Plains sculpture and added two suspension bridges, as well as biking and walking paths. The city also implemented a nightly show where nine fire pots are lit around the sculpture. And the city recently completed a 15- to 20-year plan to further develop downtown and the riverfront.
