You can get a great cup of joe at a score of local coffeehouses, but at a really great breakfast place? Until recently, those with good coffee could be counted on a closed fist. But no longer. The most recent example is a century-old building in Ellendale, where the roadrunner-esque logo in the front window spells it out in red, white, and turquoise: “A Touch of the Southwest on Southwest,” as in down-home diner fare from Santa Fe, N.M., where green and red chili sauces (always flavorful, rarely hot) are so much a part of the culture that they get consumed at every meal. Along a spectacular expanse of coral-red marble tiles, old-schoolers can order their bacon and eggs, knowing the former is cured on site and the latter come straight from the farm. Devotees of today’s diner will opt for carne adovada with their huevos, or a Benedict atop blue-corn empanadas. Riding on the success of a wildly popular grab-and-go booth at the Tower Grove Farmers’ Market, owners Jonathan Jones and Anna Sidel thought it time to go the brick-and-mortar route… Adobe is so hard to come by in these parts.
