St. Louis Magazine is hiring a business editor

The ideal candidate should have a passion for sharing insightful, engaging stories with St. Louis business leaders and entrepreneurs.

SLM Media Group—the locally owned and operated publisher of a suite of newsletters, podcasts, St. Louis Magazine, stlmag.com, and events—is looking for a highly motivated business editor. The ideal candidate should have a passion for journalism, business, and sharing insightful, engaging stories with St. Louis business leaders and entrepreneurs.

RESPONSIBLITIES

Report, write, and edit St. Louis-focused business stories across platforms:

  • Business newsletter: A look at the day’s top business stories, including a mix of original reportage and curated content for St. Louis business leaders and entrepreneurs.
  • Podcast: The BizSTL podcast provides insightful discussions with local leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators, including ideas for listeners to transform their organizations, level up their careers, and more.
  • Print editions: Manage an annual publication highlighting local business leaders to know, as well as other business-related print editions.

Generate story ideas and curate engaging contact for St. Louis’ business community:

  • Build a network of sources.
  • Stay informed of important topics, events, and trends, including key industry storylines and new developments.
  • Collaborate with a team of editors, writers, and designers to create engaging coverage across platforms.
  • Leverage reader feedback and data-driven insights. 

Grow the business vertical:

  • Collaborate with the team to build engagement and develop other business-related offerings.
  • Represent the business vertical in the community, including through event attendance and possible media appearances.
  • Other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 3–5 years of related writing, reporting, and/or editing experience. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to build relationships with sources and grasp complex subjects.
  • Podcast and public speaking experience is a plus.
  • Collaborative, with experience working across teams.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital and social media landscape.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Strong editing, reporting and writing skills. 
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in journalism, English, business, or a related field.
  • Growth mindset and a positive attitude.
