Ludwig Armand Sauget hunted with John Queeny, founder of Monsanto, on the wooded land that later became the Village of Sauget. Ludwig’s son Leo was its first mayor. “The Saugets came here as farmers and worked to build up this community,” says Leo’s grandson Rich Sr., who founded the town’s minor league baseball team, the Gateway Grizzlies. His Uncle Paul followed Leo as mayor, and Rich Jr., who played minor league ball for a while, is now president of the village. As for Rich Sr., he heads East County Enterprises and chairs the board of Touchette Regional Hospital. He and his wife, Judee, a filmmaker who focuses on quality regional films, live in a French-inspired stone mansion in…Sauget.
