Labor Day used to mark the end of swim season and the beginning of the school year. For a lot of families it was the last weekend to get away with before heading back to earlier bedtimes and busy schedules. Today Labor Day weekend is more like the first break in the school year, offering families a little extra time to plan a quick getaway, a special outing around town, or a home improvement project. If you don’t have plans yet, here are a few ideas for staying local:

And if events aren’t your thing…
Crash a Party:
Whether it’s a country club celebration or a backyard barbecue, score an invite by letting your family or friends know you’re still free. Neighborhood gatherings are the perfect parties for adding more last-minute guests to the list.
Take a Final Dip:
Pick a new community pool or go back to your favorite. If you allowed the summer to pass without taking a dip outside, pack your swimsuit for the weekend and be spontaneous. Plug in “closest pool” to your GPS when you are out and about and be adventurous, otherwise you’ll have to wait until next year!
Shop the Sales:
It’s the perfect time of year to replace old sheets, towels and other household essentials. Take advantage of store sales and finish any back to school shopping, too. Some stores are offering their lowest prices of the season, including car dealers.
Tackle a project:
The sales extend to home improvement stores. Why not seal the deck, redo the bathroom floor or put up that backsplash or shelving system you always wanted? You’ve got an extra day and likely extra team members at home to help.
