Ideas For Celebrating Mom On Her Special Day

One thing I love about St. Louis is the consistency and variety of options offered around family holidays. The Laumeier Art Fair always falls on Mother’s Day weekend, which is so nice for last-minute shoppers, family entertainment and, of course, moms themselves.

Many restaurants offer a brunch option from reasonably priced buffets to decadent feasts. A few years ago, my family met at the Missouri Botanical Garden. We strolled through the garden and enjoyed a lovely brunch at Café Flora. But with an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms forecasted for Sunday, terrace seating and walks through the park will likely not be an option.

So I asked friends and family members: What does a mom really want on Mother’s Day?

Family time

With hectic work schedules, baseball practices, and little free time, it’s often a challenge to get the family together. Many moms, young and old, cherish Mother’s Day as an opportunity to just sit back and enjoy the presence of loved ones. The Pasta House offers a “Parties to Go” menu, if your plans get rained out on Sunday.

A Day Off

Moms with young children request a day to themselves. A movie, a spa service, or another indulgence, are all great ways to honor this special day. So is sharing a cocktail, a hot tea, or an ice cream sundae. Check out The Fountain on Locust for a treat.

A Good Night’s Rest

From snoring husbands to co-sleeping kids, and dogs who hog the bed… a night in a comfy hotel room, or at mom’s house, might be just what a girl wants! The Wildwood Hotel provides an affordable escape. The fact that it’s located next door to a movie theater and shopping center is an added bonus. Stop by Milk and Honey, a kitchen and gadgets store, where wine and beer are served by the glass.

A Really Nice Card

Mother’s Day is a wonderful time to let mom know how important she is. The Paper Source in Ladue sells pre-made cards and a wide selection of pens and supplies to customize your own expressions of love.
