Zensia opens in Clayton

The new café offers a serene setting with small-batch Colombian coffee, mindful design, and authentic pastries.

A new coffee shop featuring small-batch Colombian coffee quietly opened in Clayton over the weekend. Considering the ethos of the place, the low-key opening is apt: Zensia (8121 Maryland) is designed as an oasis of serenity, guided by simple mantras: When the city shouts, we whisper coffee. A breath of fresh coffee. Not just coffee…a mindful pause. If coffee could be a spa, it would be Zensia. Here’s what to know before you go.

The Concept

At Zensia, coffee is treated as more than a beverage—it’s a full sensory experience. The three owners, all St. Louisans from Colombia, set out to create what they couldn’t find in the city: a place to enjoy truly great Colombian coffee in a tranquil setting.

“We had been looking for a place in St. Louis to experience very good Colombian coffee, and we didn’t find one,” says co-owner Juan Carlos Antolinez. “So we created it ourselves, something that we feel is unique here.”

The atmosphere reflects that vision. Guests enter through a spa-like door with frosted glass, leading into a warm space accented with black and light wood tones, greenery, generously-spaced contoured seating, and an upholstered banquette.

“We wanted a space where people could pause, enjoy life, and feel tranquility through colors and textures,” Antolinez explains. “There’s a feeling that we get when we take coffee, one we want to share and teach.  This experience is something we feel we can add to the process. We want to change the way people drink coffee.

“Most coffee shops are designed for people not to stay and linger,” Antolinez adds. “At Zensia, it’s just the opposite, and we feel confident that satisfied guests will spread the word that we are doing something different, something good.”

The Menu

Fully-corrugated cups at Zensia, a nice touch

Zensia sources directly from small Colombian farms where beans are hand-picked at peak ripeness. Roasting takes place in Colombia, and the coffee is air-freighted to St. Louis within weeks—avoiding the long, humid shipping routes that can compromise flavor. “Our supply chain is very short,” Antolinez says. “From harvest to roasting to your cup, it’s only four to six weeks. That freshness makes a huge difference.”

Consistency is just as important. The team adjusts grind, extraction, and preparation daily to ensure every cup is balanced. “Traditional Colombian coffee is usually a medium roast and not dark in color,” adds co-owner Paty Galeano. “That preserves sweetness and acidity instead of burning away the delicate flavors. It makes everything from lattes to Americanos taste better.”

The menu features six coffee varieties, with rotating daily selections and standard drink offerings, as well as cold brew, nitro, affogato, and Colombian-style herbal and fruit infusions. Twelve-ounce bags of each are available for home brewing.

The partners put the same thoughtfulness, care, and authenticity into Zensia’s pastry program. A local Colombian baker creates several kinds of empanadas and pandebonos (Colombian cheese bread), as well as specialty desserts, including milhojas (Napoleon), beso de angel (tres leches cake), and Dubai chocolate.

The Backstory

The partners behind Zensia bring diverse professional backgrounds but share a passion for coffee. Juan Carlos Antolinez came to the U.S. in 1998 for graduate studies and later founded a tech company. Fellow co-owner Alvaro Jimenez runs a raw materials company for the furniture industry. His wife, Paty Galeano, spent 16 years at Anheuser-Busch before reconnecting with her Colombian coffee roots. Although none came from the coffee world, they leaned on experts to bring their vision to life.

“Passion alone isn’t enough,” Antolinez says. “We wanted to build something that didn’t exist here, so we surrounded ourselves with people who know coffee inside and out.”
