Urban Chestnut Brewing Company, one of St. Louis’ largest and most popular craft breweries, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as part of a strategic reorganization aimed at positioning the company for future growth. As part of the restructuring, UCBC is partnering with Brian Travers, an investor with extensive experience in merchandising and marketing services for major consumer brands.
No employee jobs will be affected during the reorganization, ensuring that Urban Chestnut’s core operations—brewing and selling beers at its two St. Louis facilities—continue without disruption. The leadership team of David Wolfe, Florian Kuplent, and Jon Shine remains in place, and business operations will proceed seamlessly at both the brewery’s locations and through its retail partners.

“Partnering with Brian provides us with the ability to continue our current operations while positioning UCBC for future growth,” says Wolfe.
Founded in 2010 by Kuplent and Wolfe, Urban Chestnut has become a beloved brand both locally and internationally, known for its award-winning beers. Like many others in the industry, however, the brewery has struggled with financial challenges since the pandemic. The new partnership is expected to help Urban Chestnut with longterm financial planning and operational efficiency.
“As a local business operator, I’ve always had a lot of respect for Urban Chestnut,” says Travers. “The quality and authenticity of their beer is unmatched. I’m thrilled to partner with UCBC’s leadership team and excited to bring my business expertise to such a well-loved St. Louis brand.”
Wolfe is optimistic about what lies ahead. “We’re setting UCBC up for a stronger future,” he says. “Our goal is to be one of the top craft brewing brands in the Midwest. We’re extremely fortunate to have found a strategic partner like Brian who’s as eager as we are to help UCBC adapt and grow in an ever-changing marketplace.”
Upcoming Events
Despite these financial moves, Urban Chestnut’s lineup of upcoming events is full steam ahead. “All of our events are on track. Everything is moving forward as planned, and we’re staying focused on maintaining the quality and consistency of our products,” says Shine, head of sales operations.
One of the brewery’s upcoming events is a traditional Kölsch-style service night at the Midtown Biergarten on September 24. “Our friends from Little Lager will be guest bartending, and the Kölsch beers will be flowing nonstop, with delicious small plates served,” Shine says. The event is free to attend, with $3 Kölsch biers available.
The much-anticipated Oktoberfest celebration, October 11–13, also remains on track. The festival will take over part of Manchester Avenue in The Grove starting October 11, with street closures for live music, stein-holding contests, and an expanded lineup of vendors. The fest continues through Sunday, with a special brunch at the Midtown Brewery & Biergarten. “We’re full speed ahead on planning Oktoberfest,” says Shine. “Nothing is skipping a beat. Oktoberfest is one of our signature events, and it’s going to be bigger and better than ever this year.”
