Rendering of Yellowbelly
SOON-TO-BE HOT SPOT
The latest at Yellowbelly
Tropical vibes are headed to the Central West End. Retreat Gastropub owners Tim Wiggins and Travis Howard (pictured at right) are preparing to open their second restaurant, Yellowbelly. The announcement of its inception was made late last year; now, updates have been revealed on construction and design. Located on the new Citizen Park building’s ground floor, the space—designed by architect Nick Adams—will boast light wood wall treatments and a colorful, tropical-themed mural from artist Noah MacMillan. Similar to Retreat, expect the bar to be the focal point, with floating shelves behind it. “A lot of our initial inspiration came from the Pacific Ocean and ancient Polynesia,” says Howard. Yellowbelly is slated to open in late August/early September.
INSIDER TIP
Macklind Avenue Deli Fire
In the same week that a fire damaged Billie’s Fine Foods, another fire appears to have destroyed Macklind Avenue Deli, a beloved community deli in South City. The blaze began early Thursday morning, shortly after Fourth of July festivities, and 60 firefighters were eventually on the scene. Jonathan Feraro, a friend of the deli’s owners, was quick to start a GoFundMe page, which had raised more than $13,000 at publication time. “Casey and his crew are the nicest, most hard working and talented folks you’ll ever want to meet,” he writes. “They care a lot about our district, and we care a lot about them! Please help us help them rebuild the deli, or at least with whatever deductibles or interim expenses there may be. I can’t imagine my neighborhood without the Macklind Deli.”
NON-ALCOHOLIC BEER
WellBeing Brewing
A new and different option for hop heads is now available. Local startup WellBeing Brewing offers non-alcoholic beer, including its flagship Heavenly Body NA Golden Wheat, which contains less than .5 percent alcohol. “We believe that craft beer without alcohol gives everyone a choice, no matter the occasion,” the website notes. WellBeing has since been picked up for national distribution by Total Wines and regionally by Whole Foods, Fresh Thyme, Schnucks, and Dierbergs.
