Three Tidbits: Nighttime noshing at Coma Coffee, daytime berrying at Eckert’s Farm, table spacing issues continue at restaurants

St. Louis Magazine dining editor George Mahe discusses topical dining subjects.

Coma Coffee + Cocktails

In late January, Coma Coffee Roasters quietly moved across the hall to the former Blue Sky Tower Grill, a larger, two-story space with a 360-degree bar. In April, the owners announced a double-shot: the acquisition of a liquor license and the inauguration of evening service. The Coffee Until Cocktails program begins at happy hour (discounted drinks and bites 4–6 p.m. Mon–Fri) and transitions into an expanded menu with a full bar, wine, and beer. Coma’s new hours are 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Mon–Thu, 7a.m.–10 p.m. Fri & Sat, 7 a.m.–4 p.m. Sun. 1034 S. Brentwood, 314-250-1042.

Due to an unseasonably early crop, pick-your-own strawberry season started early this year at Eckert’s Farm in Belleville. Beginning May 5, guests are welcome to pick the fruit daily from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. for $5 per person (children under age 2 free), plus $3.99 per quart. Visitors are encouraged to reserve tickets in advance on the Eckert’s website. In addition, the popular Strawberry Festival returns this weekend, May 8 and 9, and runs every weekend in May. The celebration features live music, festival-themed foods, kids’ pony rides, a children’s play area and petting zoo (fee charged for some activities), as well as specialty strawberry desserts available for purchase. 951 S. Green Mount, Belleville, 618-233-0513.

6-foot Rule Offenders

As the pandemic wanes, people continue to feel safer and more comfortable in less populated spaces. St. Louis City and County restaurant owners who have chosen to dismiss the 6-foot rule between tables and seat their dining rooms to the max can expect pushback when customers enter the restaurant, call them out on it, and then turn around and leave. We always try to give restaurant owners the benefit of the doubt, but in this case, criticizing scofflaw operators is acceptable, especially when their colleagues are continuing to abide by the restrictions. Taking issue with the players here, not the game…
