Park Avenue Coffee’s sixth St. Louis outpost now open in Frontenac

Park Avenue Coffee, best known for its myriad varieties of gooey butter cake (73 at last count), opened its newest store on October 15 inside the main branch of Reliance Bank in Frontenac.

In June, Park Avenue opened Market Bakery Café inside the grand hall of Soulard Farmers Market, partnering with Central Illinois Bakehouse, a boutique bread bakery based in Champaign, Illinois. The Frontenac location is Park Avenue’s sixth metro area location and the coziest of the bunch. Three years ago, the bank carved out a section of the lobby to open a Tim Horton’s Express Café, which regulars dubbed “Tiny Tim’s.” Late last year, the franchisee closed all four area Tim Horton’s locations, which created an opportunity for the 12-year old, locally owned company to step in.

There are two seating areas in the space. Several high-top tables occupy the sun-lit main room; a more loung-y area with additional tables and some soft seating is also an option.

On the beverage menu are coffees, teas, smoothies, espresso drinks, as well as several varieties of Frappicano, Park Avenue’s trademarked drink containing espresso and a flavoring, mixed with milk and blended with ice.

Sweet offerings include (clockwise from bottom left): Triple chocolate, white chocolate raspberry, and turtle gooey butter cake; cookie bar and brownie; zucchini and pumpkin breads; red velvet, traditional, and pumpkin gooey butter cake.

The food menu is mostly sweets plus a few savory items like breakfast sandwiches and several varieties of quiche. Savory scones do battle with muffins, brownies, sweet scones, sweet breads, and six revolving varieties of Park Avenue’s signature gooey butter cake, available whole or by the piece.

Owner Dale Schotte is excited about the synergy. “It’s the perfect partnership,” he says of his relationship with Reliance Bank. “They have a vehicle to attract both new and existing customers, and we get to expand our brand further west.”

The Frontenac location is open seven days a week and well beyond traditional “banker’s hours”: 6:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 7:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Saturday, and 7:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Daily (and after-school) specials will be offered during the grand-opening celebration, beginning Monday, November 5.
