When it’s hot outside, sometimes the only thing that will cool you off is a cold, cold treat. Lucky for us, today is National Frozen Custard Day.
The traditional American custard that we're familiar with was invented in 1919 on Coney Island, New York, by brothers Archie and Elton Kohr. Owners of a boardwalk ice cream stand, the brothers found that adding eggs to ice cream gave it a creamier taste, a smoother texture, and made it stay cold longer. They began to sell it from their stand, and sold more than 18,000 cones in the first week.
Then, after a custard stand at the World's Fair of 1933 in Chicago, the frozen treat spread to the rest of the country, remaining especially popular in the Midwest, particularly Milwaukee.
Today, 100 years after its invention, St. Louisans can catch a few cool deals around town. Just beware of potential brain freeze.
