Carl’s Drive-In lauded by Travel + Leisure for best cheap eats

The Brentwood landmark was the magazine’s choice for the state of Missouri.

Another star in the very casual crown worn by Carl’s Drive-In has begun to twinkle. Travel + Leisure’s list of The Best Cheap Eats in Every State has called it Missouri’s best. (Read it and weep, Town Topic of Kansas City!)

They’re the recommendations of Cooking Channel’s Ali Khan, who also lauded the slinger at the Kingside Diner on last week’s episode of Cheap Eats. Kahn’s a St. Louis native, but we will, however, challenge the author of the story, who described the hamburgers as “thin as a crepe”. Certainly not. Still, they’re thin enough to maintain those prized crispy edges, which endure after the change in ownership nearly two years ago.

Not much else has changed at Carl’s, either…the homemade root beer served in frosty mugs, the fries served with a frill cup of ketchup, the chili-topped tamales, and the fist-sized drumstick that also answers to Ronnie’s Rocky Mountain.

There are some other worthy suggestions on T+L’s list, too, like John’s Roast Pork in Philadelphia. You can read about them all here.
