Are there any upscale vegan/vegetarian restaurants in St. Louis? —Rashmi G., St. Louis
“Upscale” is a tricky word. It’s equal parts arbitrary and subjective. For this discussion, I limited the choices to sit-down restaurants with full table service.

My somewhat stream-of-consciousness list follows, for both American and internationally inspired restaurants. Admittedly, some are more vegetarian/vegan-focused than others. And while some sushi can be vegetarian, I’ve left the myriad local sushi restaurants off the list. (Please feel free to email additional suggestions to [email protected].)
- Akar
- Black Salt (new location recently opened at 11429 Olive)
- Frida’s
- Louie (wouldn’t call itself vegetarian or vegan, but those offerings are worth the visit)
- Olive + Oak
- Small Batch
- Sunset 44 (“Talk to Bob [Menendez, the owner/chef],” says vegan grand dame Caryn Dugan, a.k.a. STLVegGirl. “He can make anything happen.”)
- Tree House
- Vicia
Not exactly ‘upscale’ but certainly noteworthy:
- Cate Zone
- Chilispot
- China Bistro
- Corner 17
- Diego’s Cantina
- Joy Luck Buffet
- Kitchen 95
- LuLu’s Seafood
- Meskerem
- Station No. 3
- The Royale
- Wei Hong
- Wonton King
