Recently named the “Best Free Museum in the United States” by Newsweek, the Saint Louis Science Center is a place of discovery and exploration for all ages. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions and seek answers while exploring an array of interactive exhibits across 10 galleries.

As one of the few free nonprofit science museums in the country, the Science Center strives to make STEM education accessible and engaging for everyone, regardless of background. With each exhibition and program, the center aims to empower visitors to explore the “Wonder of Why.”
“It’s just about fun,” Peirce says. “Hands-on learning provides a time for exploration without worrying about judgement.”
One of its permanent fixtures, the OMNIMAX® Theater, showcases an unparalleled cinematic experience that transports audiences into the heart of scientific marvels. As one of just nine IMAX® Dome with Laser theaters worldwide, it enthralls visitors with awe-inspiring films such as Train Time, The Blue Angels, and T. REX, bringing these stories to life with breathtaking visuals.
Adjacent to the theater is the James S. McDonnell Planetarium, which USA Today recently crowned “America’s Best Planetarium.” Celebrating St. Louis’ rich history in space study, the dome offers star shows that guide spectators through the wonders of the night sky and inspects the impact of geospatial technologies.
“The Planetarium is iconic for St. Louis and has been around since 1963—all generations of local residents have been to it at least once in their life,“ says Public Relations Manager Douglas Bolnick.
Diving deeper into the mysteries of life, the GROW gallery offers a 5,000-square-foot interactive investigation into agriscience and its significance. From innovative farming techniques to sustainable food production, GROW enlightens guests about agriculture’s critical role in shaping the future, bridging the gap between scientific research and real-world applications.
For fossil fanatics and aspiring paleontologists, the Earth Sciences gallery provides a journey through time and features the ever-popular animatronic Tyrannosaurus rex. Here, visitors can delve into the past by examining real fossils or exploring geological phenomena such as earthquakes and tectonic activity, guided by knowledgeable staff ready to share insights into Earth’s dynamic history.
The Science Center’s newest exhibit, Inside the Vault, highlights the importance of regional history, showcasing six unique collections of artifacts and specimens, totaling more than 100,000 pieces. The collections include The Ornithology, The Weiss Space, The International Shoe, The Hess Cherokee Cave, The Paleoanthropology, and The FDA Medical Quackery.
Furthermore, the Life Science Gallery offers a unique glimpse into how scientists draw inspiration from nature to advance human health and well-being. Whether through hands-on laboratories, classroom experiences, or the updated atrium, guests can witness the intersection of biology, health, and technology.
Beyond the galleries and exhibits, the Science Center is committed to community engagement and STEM promotion. As a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate, accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and a recipient of the Roy L. Shafer Leading Edge Award, the center partners with leading professionals and organizations to reduce educational barriers to STEM and foster curiosity. With outreach and programming extending beyond its walls, the center aims to champion lifelong learning and inspire the future generation of innovators.
