For those of you obsessed with first-day-restaurant-itis, the relocated Nosh opened about an hour ago.
Formerly located in Maplewood, it's now inside of Bud Starr's wine shop at 1135 S. Big Bend in Richmond Heights. It replaces the very short lived Las Brisas, and before that, Bistro Oliver. Only subtle changes were made to the already handsome space: pendant lights now hang above some tables, a few high-top deuces were added, plus, there's a homey, private table for 6-8 (all nicely done, by the way).
The menu is similar to the prior Nosh, but it's larger. The lunch menu features a selection of salads, wraps, flatbreads, and 7 sandwiches, including a Spanakopita Lamb Burger and a Monte Cristo dipped in Amaretto batter. The dinner menu has many of those same items, plus half a dozen entrees, most priced in the "sweet spot," aka the mid-teens.
On the menu, the cooking style is described as à la minute, a French expression for fresh, cooked to order, and "don't expect the orders to come flying out of the kitchen."
Angela Komis is the exec chef, as she was at the prior location; Jeremy Bowman, veteran of Lola and 1111 Mississippi, is the sous. He spent his formative years in the kitchen of Pennsylvania's four-star Hotel Hershey, where his father was the chef.
Nosh will carry on one of the more appealing features of Bistro Oliver: besides there being a short wine list, guests may walk the ten steps into Starr's wine shop an choose a bottle from that collection (a nominal corkage fee applies). Few restaurants are able to offer that kind of versatility and convenience.
Patrons familiar with the old Nosh might ask what happened to Paula Anderson, its chef/owner (and the former Mrs. Bud Starr). Having survived a health scare during the final months of the Maplewood store, she's now the GM of the new iteration. Her smiling face will welcome you when you visit.
